Tour Description

Just 40 minutes north of Auckland, Matakana has long been a popular destination for Aucklanders. It's a place to enjoy unique sculpture, wine trails, forest walks and urban sophistication. There’s something about Matakana Village… a visit to Matakana comes with memories to treasure.

Day 1: Matakana Art and Vineyard Experience

Spend an amazing day exploring beautiful gardens filled with unique sculptures, art galleries & then finish your day visiting a boutique vineyard to taste premium selection of wines.

Sculptureum is a place to be inspired by nature and human creativity. An art experience that is internationally unique. Over 400 works of art fill three sculpture gardens and six galleries. A destination that has been ten years in the making is designed to unlock the imagination, fuel creativity and ignite the mind. The gardens burst with colourful plantings that change with the seasons. Imposing prehistoric rocks rise up alongside panels that display reflections in writing on Gardens, Inspiration, Wisdom, Art and Music.

An art and food experience wouldn’t be complete without a glass of wine. Experience the Architectural award-winning Glass House, cantilevered over a shimmering lake with a fabulous food featuring the freshest seasonal produce. Taste our highly acclaimed range of wines, overlooking the vineyard where all our wine is estate grown.

The drive from Matakana to Paihia will take approximately 2 hours. You are set to relax for an overnight stay. Paihia is a great place to experience New Zealand’s beautiful scenery and unique wildlife.

Day 2: Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach Tour

Be ready for a journey like no other with a full-day coach tour into the Far North of New Zealand. Along the way you'll visit ancient kauri forests, drive along the sand of Ninety Mile Beach and even have a go at sand boarding – surfing down the massive sand dunes at Te Paki Stream dunes (if you dare!) is sure to get your heart pumping.

A visit to New Zealand is not complete without a journey to the very top of the North Island – Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua). The very tip of Aotearoa (New Zealand) will open your eyes to Māori culture as you learn of the spiritual significance of this place Cape Reinga where two oceans collide. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views, visit the iconic lighthouse, and see the point where the Tasman Sea and the mighty Pacific Ocean come crashing together.

Day 3: Hole in the Rock Dolphin Cruise and Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Take a half-day Hole in the Rock cruise and explore the Bay in search of dolphins while visiting its highlights. You could be watching dolphins as they leap and play in sheltered waters - or keep an eye out for other marine mammals like whales and seals. Cruise in and out of beautiful unspoiled islands, see the remote Cape Brett Lighthouse and the impressive Hole in the Rock at Motukōkako Island.

Within a 5 minute drive, The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are an absolute must-do when you are in the Bay of Islands – rich in history and stories of the momentous events which shaped our nation. Take time to wander through the beautiful grounds of the Waitangi estate, complete with extensive gardens, bush tracks, beaches, and fabulous views over the Bay of Islands and beyond. Enjoy an inspiring and interactive experience as you discover Waitangi’s two contemporary museums, powerful Maori cultural performances, informative guided tours, lush native forest and gardens, carving studio with live demonstrations, marvel at the scale of Ngatokimatawhaorua, the world’s largest ceremonial war canoes (waka taua), a quality café in tranquil surrounds, and so much more, all with stunning views over the Bay of Islands.
