Leaving Auckland through the rolling hills of the Waikato region and beautiful farming towns along the way, you'll experience beautiful countryside in luxurious coach comfort. Located 10 minutes away from the bustling Matamata Township the Shires Rest sits among the hills on a private working farm awaiting our arrival. Your guided tour starts with a drive through our picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges.

Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the unequivocal beauty of the land, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. Your guide will escort you around the set, showing the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how the movie magic was made.

After returning to Matamata, re-join the luxury coach to travel through majestic tree-lined town that sits at the heart of New Zealand’s rural heartland to visit Lake Karapiro, a man-made lake on the Waikato River and is renowned as a world-class rowing venue. With a green treat we return back to Auckland.

  • Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for the conditions, Sun protection, jacket/warm layer, & any essential personal items

  • Easy and good fitness level required

  • This is a guided walking tour and sensible walking footwear is recommended

  • You must be able to climb and descend stairs and walk on unpaved or uneven terrain.

  • Bring a camera or a phone with camera capability as Hobbiton is the perfect place to get some great travel photos.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age and present a valid photo ID in order to consume alcohol.

  • No photography is permitted inside the Waitomo caves, and cameras and Go Pros cannot be taken on the tour
